Exploring the possibilities of the infinitesimal

June 11, 2015

Nanotechnology ("nanotech") is the manipulation of matter on an atomic or molecular scale. It’s hard to imagine just how small nanotechnology is. One nanometer is a billionth of a meter. A sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick.

Nanotechnology is revolutionizing many technology and industry sectors: information technology, energy, environmental science, medicine, homeland security, food safety, and transportation, among many others.

Harvard Professor Kaxiras’ pioneering work in using computational modeling of the infinitesimally small has made many of these applications possible. Professor Kaxiras’ work in computer modeling can even let doctors predict heart attacks before they happen.

Please join us for an incredible evening with one of the pioneers in this remarkable area of technology.

About

Nanotechnology is the ability to see and manipulate individual atoms and molcules.  It’s hard to imagine just how small nanotechnology is. One nanometer is a billionth of a meter, or 10-9 of a meter. On a comparative scale, if a marble were a nanometer, then one meter would be the size of the Earth.

Professor Kaxiras’ work can in computer modeling can even let doctors predict heart attacks before they happen:
